Pre-Sales Cards: Managing Demand for Limited-Supply Products

Ogloba Team3 min read

How does a retailer sell a product it does not yet have enough of? It sells the claim on the unit, not the unit. A pre-sale card is a prepaid voucher carrying a deposit — often around 10% of the retail price — that reserves a launch product for the customer, who settles the balance when the product lands. At the checkout it behaves exactly like a gift card, redeemed for the value it holds.

Why Fixed Store Allocation Loses Sales

Dividing 5,000 units evenly between two stores assumes both will sell the same amount. They rarely do. One outlet runs out and turns customers away; the other closes the promotion with cards still on the rack. The retailer misses the sales and still never learns where demand actually sat.

Over-Distribute the Cards, Cap the Sales

The alternative is to place 5,000 cards in each store — 10,000 in total against a 5,000-unit ceiling — so no shelf runs dry. The limit is then enforced by the platform rather than by the rack. Ogloba monitors pre-sale volume in real time across outlets, deactivates the surplus cards once the cap is reached, and blocks card number 5,001 at the point of sale.

When selling closes, allocation stops being a forecast and becomes a count. Units go where the deposits already are.

FAQ

A deposit, often around 10% of the retail price. It reserves the launch product, and the customer settles the balance when the product lands.

No. At the till it behaves exactly like a gift card and is redeemed for the value it holds, so no separate handling is required.

Because the ceiling is enforced by the platform, not by the rack. Ogloba watches pre-sale volume across outlets in real time and deactivates the surplus cards once the cap is reached.

Card number 5,001 is blocked at the point of sale. Selling stops at the true ceiling instead of being rationed store by store in advance.
