Five Ways to e-Recharge a Mobile Phone: PIN and PIN-less Explained

There is no universally correct way to sell airtime. There is a correct way for each distribution network — and the platform should not be the thing that decides.

PIN-Based: Familiar, Auditable, Easy to Adopt

EVD, Electronic Voucher Distribution, is the strongest first move for a market shifting off scratch cards, because consumer behaviour barely has to change. A PIN reaches the end user exactly as it did before. A receipt supports audit and claim management. PINs sit in the device much like physical inventory. And the POS interface is already familiar to store staff.

Mechanically, the Ogloba host sends an encrypted activation code, the terminal decrypts and prints the e-Voucher with instructions, serial number, bar code and terminal, cashier and retailer identifiers. The customer then recharges via IVR or a USSD message. EVD also runs offline, with PINs held in the sales outlet device — long the traditional practice in Saudi Arabia.

PIN-less: Fewer Steps, Tighter Loop

DTU, Direct Top Up, removes the PIN entirely. The customer enters their MSISDN and a flexible top-up value, the salesperson swipes a pre-enrolled card, the request goes to the operator's IN system, authorisation returns to the outlet and an SMS confirms the credit.

Both models run from the same Ogloba platform on standards-based interfaces defined during implementation. The strategic value is optionality — distribution networks differ, and the recharge model should follow them rather than lead them.
